As we fly at warp speed through the 21^st century, technology has now caught up with one of the first musical instruments ever made, bagpipes. Electric bagpipes, also called electronic bagpipes are rapidly becoming all the rage for pipers. 

Don’t laugh, it’s true, we now have techno bagpipes. 

The knowledge behind this new fad is called crystal-controlled micro controller technology.  Which for those of you who didn’t understand that, it means the bagpipes are totally digital.  This advantages to this is that frequency drifts and drone tuning problems are non existent.  The finger spacing is exactly the same as a regular pipe chanter, however this instrument uses electronic touch sensors. Incredibly, this device can be programmed to play in different keys; the normal bagpipe key of Bb or any of seven different keys that will allow you to match the pitch of other instruments. 

How do you hold it? 

Well, you must maintain contact between the common terminal on the backside of the chanter tube and your right thumb during operation. 

Why would you buy one of these?

 Well, there are many reasons but I will give you a few:

• This electric bagpipe (chanter) will increase your practice time as you can use it anywhere and don’t have to be isolated because of the intimidating sound of a regular practice chanter. 
• It can also be hooked up to an amplifier and used on stage.
•  And lastly, they are FUN!  What other reason do you need?

 So slip on your kilt, pop open your pipe case, tell everyone to gather round and start playing your electric bagpipes!
